OUT OF TIME – A Monica McCarty Review

My final review for 2018! Loved closing out the year with an action suspense romance, and surprise this one is a two-fer! Not only do we get to enjoy Scott and Natalie’s story there’s a second couple throughout who share a redemption. Now, in order to truly understand all that goes on in this book, I do recommend reading books one and two as they outline the whole backstory AND the bomb dropped (no pun intended) at the end of book 2 that leads to our hero and heroine reconnecting. On the run as he’s supposed to be dead, Scott has recently learned that the woman he loved (and thought he lost) was a double agent, working as a sleeper Russian spy within the US government. Brokenhearted, he goes on a mission to find out her secrets and if he and his men can figure out who leaked their original mission.

Natalie is also on the run. A sleeper spy she is not but no one will believe her. Threatened by a true spy she unknowingly gave some information but risked it all to save the man she love’s life. That risk cost her everything and now she has to take on a new identity in order to survive. When Scott shows up, looking for the identity she took over and finding Natalie instead, its a battle of truth and trust. With all the secrets she kept, how can Scott ever believe the biggest one she has and its the only one to make him truly trust her. As Scott has to learn to trust his gut with Natalie, he can’t deny that he wants to protect her at all costs. There’s still the same flare of attraction when they touch. Being on the run is no easy romance, and the suspense will keep you guessing until the end.

The side story throughout Out of Time was a shinning point for me. In the previous novels, we learned about Kate, Scott’s newly discovered half-sister, and her now ex-husband Colt. Torn by what Colt thought was an affair between the two (which was really a new sibling-ship), their divorce and now uncivil attitudes spark off the page. Both still love one another, but Kate can’t come to terms with Colt not trusting her, and Colt doesn’t understand how badly he hurt Kate in his doubt. As the climax of the Lost Platoon’s fate comes to a near-end, Colt and Kate reconnect in am explosively sexual way, cutting the tension with heartbreaking passion. Two couples reunited through tragedy, learning to trust and love each other again! My only disappointment is that the true leak of the platoon’s mission seemed too easy to figure out and almost had an anticlimactic ending. But let’s be real…we’re all here mostly for the romance!

A hunt for dangerous secrets leads to explosive chemistry in this exhilarating romantic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Off the Grid.

A team of Navy SEALs goes on a mission and disappears without a trace–they are the Lost Platoon.

With his men scattered to all corners of the globe after a disastrous secret op in Russia, Lieutenant Commander Scott Taylor is trying to find out who was responsible for leaking the information that killed half his platoon. Were it not for Natalie Andersson, the woman he had been secretly dating in the Pentagon who had warned him of the danger, he knows they would all be dead. Scott is devastated when he hears that the woman he loved and hoped to marry has been killed for helping him–until he learns that Natalie was the spy who betrayed them. But when his search to clear his name brings him face-to-face with a very-much-alive Natalie, Scott realizes that justice and vengeance might not be as clear-cut as he thought.

Natalie Andersson, or, as she was born, Natalya Petrova, has put the memories of her early childhood in Russia behind her. She never dreamed that she would be at the center of an elaborate “sleeper” espionage program. Even when she learns the truth, she refuses to spy for the country of her birth, until the Russians threaten the lives of the only family she has ever known. But Natalie is the worst spy in the history of spying, falling for her target. When her attempt at misdirection leads to irreversible consequences, she is forced to run for her life, with her lover hot on her tail.

OFF THE GRID – A Monica McCarty Review

Danger. Intrigue. Suspense. ROMANCE! McCarty’s next Lost Platoon novel has all that and MORE! Brittany went in to investigative reporting for a reason, the death of her parents and the supposed cover-up of who killed them. Now the disappearance and hush-hush attitude about her SEAL brother weighs heavily in her mind. She knows she has to take any action to find out the truth.

John’s living a life of secrecy on Finland. One of six survivors from his platoon he’s got to keep his identity under wraps until their leader can suss out who tried to kill them…and why. It was going easy for a few months of numbinginly drinking and exploring the wilds. When his lost platoon brother’s sister begins sniffing around their disappearance he has to take extreme measures. But a contingency he hadn’t planned for soon bubbles up. Brittany’s grown into a striking woman and John may have finally found something that shakes his calm demeanor.

I’m categorizing this as a second chance romance. John knew Brittany five years before his platoon’s destruction. Back then she had been in a rough place with the supposed loss of her career and he found himself caring for her immediately. Now these two come face to face and battle it out as John fights to protect his secrets and Brittany fights for her family and the truth. McCarty does a fantastic job keeping action going on every page. Whether its investigating, running, or fighting these two are always up to something and I couldn’t put this book down!

I feel as if every action/suspense romance I pickup has the tendency to get redundant but I’m so glad the McCarty keeps it fresh and inventive as her world takes crazy twists and turns. I could very easily see this being made into a movie! There’s also a side story about Colt, Kate, and Taylor… OMG I was HOOKED on it and I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book! Wonderful world building, powerful characters, and never a dull moment!

Its not often you find yourself across the seas in Scotland, defending a land you’ve never seen. But when the plan goes awry and Annie has to decide between what’s right and wrong and her life, she has to depend on the ship’s captain, Dan to save her.

Dan, AKA Dean, has been under strict orders to “go dark”; a new identity and no contact with his SEAL team as they try to investigate who betrayed them. What he hadn’t planned for? Now he has to fight his feelings for her as he fights to stay incognito to protect his team. But how can he do that when Annie is smarter than he thinks…and is sussing out his darkest secrets?

A first in her new series, McCarty hits all the good spots with this action packed suspense romance. Fans of Julie Walker, April Hunt, and Katie Ruggle will LOVE it! There’s a lot of history that goes in to the SEAL team but I liked that McCarty gave us a chance to see what happens in the prologue. There’s never a dull moment from the time Annie and Dean set eyes on one another. Action from all sides paired with a couple who keep their wits about them as they navigate open seas and treacherous waters makes for highly entertaining action romance! Hoping for more of The Lost Platoon series!

Dean was about to turn up his street when a woman darted past him. She was so preoccupied with whatever was bothering her that she didn’t notice him.

But he noticed her. The sexy brunette had been the focus of too many of his sex-starved thoughts for him not to have recognized that shadowed figure right away.

His thoughts immediately turned to anger. What the hell was she doing out here alone at this time of night?

Granted Stornoway wasn’t exactly the mean streets of name-your-favorite American inner city, but it had its share of illegal activity—especially along the waterfront—and it wasn’t a place where a young woman should be walking alone in the middle of the night.

He went after her without thinking. Proving his point, she took way too long to realize he was behind her.

He could tell by the way she jumped when she turned around that he’d startled her.

But it didn’t last. As soon as she recognized him, her eyes narrowed angrily. “Why are you following me? You scared me!”

“Good. You shouldn’t be out here alone—” He stopped suddenly, seeing her expression. She looked about ready to burst into tears. “What’s wrong?”

Unconsciously he’d reached for her arm. Why the hell he’d done that he had no clue. He didn’t go around touching women without an invitation.

He released her before she could protest. But if she’d noticed the too-personal gesture, she didn’t let on.

“Nothing,” she replied, her expression too blank.

He held her gaze long enough for her to see that he knew she was lying. It must not be something she did often, because a guilty blush rose to her cheeks.

She was so damned cute. He wanted to . . .

Fuck.

He took a step back.

Go dark. Don’t do anything to risk your cover.

He heard the warnings loud and clear. But he couldn’t very well let her walk around alone. What if something happened?

“Where’s your boyfriend?”

The tightening around her mouth before she responded gave a big hint of what might be bothering her. Trouble in paradise? Now, that was a cryin’ shame.

“He’s still at camp. He’s hanging around for the music. Julien plays guitar.”

Dean didn’t care if he was Jimmy Hendrix returning from the dead for one last show. “And he let you walk back alone?”

She immediately stiffened, giving him a scathing look. “He didn’t let me do anything. I make my own decisions.”

From the way she said it, it was clear she thought he was some kind of medieval misogynistic pig.

One of those, was she? He should have guessed. That kind of oversensitive feminist crap drove him crazy—not everything was a “microagression.” Being a strong woman didn’t mean you could be stupid about personal safety. And all he’d meant was that douche bag should have cared enough about her safety enough to insist on accompanying her.

Although admittedly Julien probably wasn’t much of a defense.

“Then your decision was a shitty one.”

She looked stunned. “You just say whatever you think, don’t you? I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”

“Well, you got it.” He gave her a long look, taking in the Tulane sweatshirt, tight jeans that left no room to hide anything, and flip-flops. “And unless you are a black belt jujitsu specialist or trained in self-defense and carrying some kind of weapon, I’m walking you to the guest house.”

She looked up at him half outraged and half bemused, as if she couldn’t quite believe someone like him actually existed. It was a look he’d been on the receiving end of more than once.

Eventually her mouth twisted with a smile. “How do you know I’m not?”

“Because if you had any secret ninja skills, from the way you were looking at me a few minutes ago, I’d be on my ass right now.”
