Gah, I wanted to like this book so much more than I did! I really wanted to but it was just so depressing with a low level of relief.
Elliot and Wade are high school sweethearts who had been together only one year before some tragic break up splits them apart for 8 years. Wade runs off to the military while Elliot suffers life as a live in nanny for her HORRIBLE sister. I mean I’ve met my fair share of nasty folk but Elliot’s family takes the cake in complete asshole-ry. I’ve never been so angry for a character while also being angry AT the character for just kind of letting them walk all over her.
Elliot claims that she’s aware that her family is horribly rude to her and take advantage of her but she can’t hold it against them because “they’ve always been like that”… GIRL…REALLY? Please for the love of Pete grow a pair. Add in that she’s mopey and downtrodden for 8 YEARS over a 1 year relationship. But I get it, its true love and nothing can stop it..fine. But the only ray of light in Elliot’s life are her sister’s children who miraculously are angels compared to the rest of the family they come from.
The other adjoining theme to this book is that Wade finally returns home to find his father, Rick, dying of brain cancer and has a few weeks left to live. On one hand the beautiful relationship he has with his father, and his father has with his other children and Elliot was a beacon of hope for this story. Elliot and Rick’s connection via poetry was beautifully encapsulated with a pleasant surprise ending despite the sad loss.
I somehow can’t wrap my head around the deep connection between these two teenagers – now adults that happened over 1 year yet the heartache spanned over 8 after a break up that was bad but, to me personally, not traumatizing.
As I said before: I wanted to like this story more than I did. It was written well and the characters did have a great sense of development; even the side characters. I’m not sure what was lacking. Maybe it was the theme of expecting these “1000 letters” to be a main focus only to, unfortunately, be let down with how little they pose importance during it. Not a bad read; but a disappointing one. Hoping the best for the future!
