OUT OF TIME – A Monica McCarty Review

My final review for 2018! Loved closing out the year with an action suspense romance, and surprise this one is a two-fer! Not only do we get to enjoy Scott and Natalie’s story there’s a second couple throughout who share a redemption. Now, in order to truly understand all that goes on in this book, I do recommend reading books one and two as they outline the whole backstory AND the bomb dropped (no pun intended) at the end of book 2 that leads to our hero and heroine reconnecting. On the run as he’s supposed to be dead, Scott has recently learned that the woman he loved (and thought he lost) was a double agent, working as a sleeper Russian spy within the US government. Brokenhearted, he goes on a mission to find out her secrets and if he and his men can figure out who leaked their original mission.

Natalie is also on the run. A sleeper spy she is not but no one will believe her. Threatened by a true spy she unknowingly gave some information but risked it all to save the man she love’s life. That risk cost her everything and now she has to take on a new identity in order to survive. When Scott shows up, looking for the identity she took over and finding Natalie instead, its a battle of truth and trust. With all the secrets she kept, how can Scott ever believe the biggest one she has and its the only one to make him truly trust her. As Scott has to learn to trust his gut with Natalie, he can’t deny that he wants to protect her at all costs. There’s still the same flare of attraction when they touch. Being on the run is no easy romance, and the suspense will keep you guessing until the end.

The side story throughout Out of Time was a shinning point for me. In the previous novels, we learned about Kate, Scott’s newly discovered half-sister, and her now ex-husband Colt. Torn by what Colt thought was an affair between the two (which was really a new sibling-ship), their divorce and now uncivil attitudes spark off the page. Both still love one another, but Kate can’t come to terms with Colt not trusting her, and Colt doesn’t understand how badly he hurt Kate in his doubt. As the climax of the Lost Platoon’s fate comes to a near-end, Colt and Kate reconnect in am explosively sexual way, cutting the tension with heartbreaking passion. Two couples reunited through tragedy, learning to trust and love each other again! My only disappointment is that the true leak of the platoon’s mission seemed too easy to figure out and almost had an anticlimactic ending. But let’s be real…we’re all here mostly for the romance!

A hunt for dangerous secrets leads to explosive chemistry in this exhilarating romantic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Off the Grid.

A team of Navy SEALs goes on a mission and disappears without a trace–they are the Lost Platoon.

With his men scattered to all corners of the globe after a disastrous secret op in Russia, Lieutenant Commander Scott Taylor is trying to find out who was responsible for leaking the information that killed half his platoon. Were it not for Natalie Andersson, the woman he had been secretly dating in the Pentagon who had warned him of the danger, he knows they would all be dead. Scott is devastated when he hears that the woman he loved and hoped to marry has been killed for helping him–until he learns that Natalie was the spy who betrayed them. But when his search to clear his name brings him face-to-face with a very-much-alive Natalie, Scott realizes that justice and vengeance might not be as clear-cut as he thought.

Natalie Andersson, or, as she was born, Natalya Petrova, has put the memories of her early childhood in Russia behind her. She never dreamed that she would be at the center of an elaborate “sleeper” espionage program. Even when she learns the truth, she refuses to spy for the country of her birth, until the Russians threaten the lives of the only family she has ever known. But Natalie is the worst spy in the history of spying, falling for her target. When her attempt at misdirection leads to irreversible consequences, she is forced to run for her life, with her lover hot on her tail.

And how did I end up writing romance? It’s not as divergent as it seems. What I loved about being a lawyer are the same things I love about being a writer—research and writing. The only thing missing is the arguing, but that’s what a husband and kids are for, right?

ROCKY MOUNTAIN COWBOY CHRISTMAS – A Katie Ruggle Review

img_2070

Rocky Mountains are supposed to be idyllic and peaceful, which is exactly what Steve planned when he moved his four children from the chaos of their home town. A Christmas tree ranch and shop is the perfect place for them to grown up. Settled in as a fire fighter in town, Steve runs into Camille when she needs “rescued”. Except his version of a rescue is her version of hell. Camille loves her solitude and doesn’t handle being the center of attention well. Sparking his interest, Steve sees Camille in a new light and can’t fight his attraction to her. But when her life is put in danger he’s determined to keep her close.

Camille has been quite happy in her solitude and is thrown for a loop when Steve Springfield is back in town. Downsides to being a hermit is not knowing when your high-school crush moves back in to town. And running in to him in the most embarrassing situation…over and over again. The final straw: a fire burns down her home, with her in it and Steve comes to the rescue. Now in his home and around his kids, she may finally be finding her people and a way to be happy around others. If it wasn’t for the other fires that keep threatening her, she could just be happy.

Ruggle has the ability to write action and suspense romance weaved perfectly together. But I will warn readers that this romance, is a slooooow burn that is worth the wait. Steve and Camille’s chemistry is instant and incredibly charming. Steve takes all of Camille’s “quirks” in stride and his children help win her over. I honestly loved Camille’s interactions with each of Steve’s kids, each one manages to pull a new side of her out making me love her more. And just when you think that HEA is on its way, prepare for a big twist you just can’t predict.

Folk artist Camille Brandt lives a quiet life. As the town’s resident eccentric, she’s used to being lonely–until Steve freaking Springfield changes everything. Brave and kind, he’s always had a piece of her heart, and it doesn’t take long before she’s in danger of falling for him and his rambunctious kids. But as mysterious fires break out across the sleepy Colorado town, Steve and Camille will have to fight if they want their happy family to survive until Christmas…

GOT IT BAD – A Christi Barth Review, Excerpt Reveal & Giveaway

img_1974

Barth sure saved the best for last. On the run and in Witness Protection for his brothers’ own misdeeds, Kellan has had a hard time coming to terms with being the only MacGuire brother kept in the dark. They’ve never kept secrets from each other and his brothers’ lies still weigh on his mind. To make matters worse, the girl he was entranced with turns out to be their handler from the US Marshals. Now stuck between a rock and a hard place, Kelly has decide what’s worth fighting for: family or HEA.

Delaney’s kept her head on straight her whole career. She loves helping witnesses find a new life when defending against wrong doings; she’s passionate in her field and wants to be the best. But the MacGuire brothers are testing her every patience. Moving them 5 times is bad enough, but having feelings for the one innocent brother under her protection is slightly worse, not to mention against the rules. But Kellan is charming and knows his incessant flirting gets a rise out of her every time. But when he asks for something to better protect himself and his brothers, Delaney sees the man beneath the flirty persona. He loves his family and doesn’t want to risk losing them. As they spend more time together, tensions rise and come to a head. Can they keep their passion a secret or will it tear this whole operation apart?

If you’ve read the first to MacGuire boys, you’ve more than likely been waiting to see just how Delaney and Kellan handle their fiery attraction. Any two characters that have that much fire between them are bound to explode: and whoooo do they ever. Filled with passion and stolen moments, Delaney and Kellan break all the rules to fall for one another. But there’s a twist readers won’t see coming. And some secrets will risk it all to come out. A great finale to our bad boy MacGuire Brothers!

In USA Today bestseller Christi Barth’s last Bad Boys Gone Good novel, the brother who’s always followed the rules finally gets to be a little bad.

Kellan Maguire was a semester away from becoming a lawyer when his life imploded. Now he’s in Witness Protection, hiding from the mob and mad as hell that his brothers lied to him about, oh, everything. The only bright spot in his new life is their drop-dead-gorgeous U.S. Marshal handler. Yeah, he wants to handle her… a lot.

Federal Marshal Delaney Evans has protected her fair share of dangerous criminals. But Kellan is a whole different kind of dangerous—dangerously hot, to be specific. The charming, handsome, and utterly law-abiding Maguire brother got under her skin the moment they met and the more time she spends with him, the harder it is to deny their attraction. Delaney’s willing to give Kellan one night—to get him out of her system—and then it’s over.

Except one night isn’t enough and soon they’re breaking every rule of WITSEC to be together. Kellan’s got it bad for her, but Delaney’s career, her entire life, would fall apart if anyone found out. And then the biggest complication of all hits…

“You have my word.”

“Great. The word of an almost lawyer,” Delaney said mockingly. “That and twelve dollars will buy me a martini.”

Then she instantly regretted pushing his buttons. It was habit. It was fun.

It was dangerous.

One thick, dark eyebrow winged up, like an arched frame around his stunning ice-blue eye. “First you call me spoiled, and now you’re insulting my near-lawyerness? If I didn’t know better, I’d say the lady doth protest too much.”

“The lady has her hands full dealing with your troublesome brothers. She doesn’t need to waste her energy constantly fending you off, too.”

“I think you do.” Kellan set his cup down.

Delaney gaped at him. Because she’d been oh-so-careful never to give away with so much as a flicker the fact the she was still interested. How could he tell something that Delaney barely admitted to herself? “You think I want to keep fending you off?”

“Yes.” Kellan stepped closer. In fact, he moved in way past what would be polite. Invaded her personal space just as much as he’d been invading her mind. “You like fighting with me. You could ignore my compliments, my flirty remarks. You don’t. You rise to the bait every time. I think you’re every bit as frustrated as I am.”

“You don’t know anything about my life outside the time I spend working on your case.” Heat flashed across her cheeks and chest. And she stepped in, too. To where the tips of her breasts brushed his chest, and her feet bumped against his. “Don’t begin to think you know me.”

“I don’t think. I know. I know that you may have been on dates since you met me.  But none of them distracted you from whatever’s simmering between us. You want to turn back the clock to the day I asked you out and follow through on it.”

“I don’t.” Her words were the verbal equivalent of a foot stamp. Then, softer, as if she didn’t mean to speak it out loud at all, Delaney said, “We can’t.”

In response, Kellan framed her face with his hands, tilted her head back more, and kissed her.

Not the light, polite, introduction kiss they’d shared the first time. Delaney had obviously pushed him past that step. Kellan kissed as if he needed her to know just how badly he wanted her. His lips worked across her mouth, moving and kneading. Kellan nipped at her wide bottom lip. It felt like punishment for her making him wait so long

It also felt like a reward for waiting so long, and she rewarded him with a tiny moan.

Delaney’s hands fisted in his thick hair, pulling and tugging. It undoubtedly showed him the insta-heat burning her up inside as much as the way her leg wrapped around his calf.

She wanted more.

His tongue teased at the seam of her lips, and Delaney opened for him like they’d already done this dance a hundred times. She tasted the sweetness lingering from his drink. Desire rocketed through her, turning her nerves to lava. From the way his penis had hardened to pure steel against her belly, Kellan felt the same.

He streaked the backs of his knuckles down the undersides of her raised arms. Kept going to just lightly brush them along the sides of her breasts, her ribs, the flare of her hips to finally land on the curve of her ass.

Kellan dug his fingers in and lifted. Just high enough to press her center against his penis. Instantly, she got on board with the position, rocking against him even as her tongue twined and teased.

It was impossible to stop the little, breathy moans that kept escaping from her. It was impossible not to undulate against his rock hard abs and dig her fingers into the sculpted muscles of his back. Kissing Kellan wasn’t foreplay. It was a sex act all by itself. Utterly satisfying even as it drove her hunger up immeasurably.

And while Delaney would’ve sworn it was impossible, he was a million times better in reality than all the ways she’d fantasized being with him over the past months. Kellan ripped his mouth away to burn a trail of kisses down the side of her neck.

A semi rolled by, and the driver honked for a long time. It had been easy to ignore the white noise of the cars passing, but the horn broke through to Delaney. It reminded her they were on the edge of a green-scummed pond, across from a strip mall. The world could see them making out. And they’d already shot way past a reasonable stopping point.

So she unwound her leg and put her foot back down on the ground. Kellan seemed to get the signal. He dialed back the intensity on his kisses and rained them up the side of her face, down her nose, to end with a light peck on her mouth before easing back. Then he moved his hands to her shoulders.

It took a moment for her eyes to re-open. When they did, it took another moment before Delaney fully focused on him.

“Not only can we kiss,” Kellan said with enough authority to make her realize he wouldn’t allow her to pretend this hadn’t happened. To pretend that she hadn’t just climbed him like a tree and responded with a fervor that matched his own. “We’re absolutely doing it again.”

THROUGH THE FIRE – A Katie Ruggle Review

img_1839

Back in the quiet (but recently not so much quiet) town of Monroe, the past is about to come to a head. Kit is the newest K9 officer and she’s lucky enough to have her K9 partner, a tracking bloodhound, right when a series of arson cases pop up in Monroe. The towns experienced murder, betrayal, and bombs…what’s some more crime?

Suspicious of her new department despite her best efforts, Kit is independent in her own search for the truth. Alongside her bloodhound, she encounters one stoney but surprisingly nerdy watchtower foremen, Wes. Particular in his ways and insanely smart, the two strike up a relationship as town outsiders. But Kit has more than a new town and a new man to overcome. The interloper lighting all of the fires seems to be coming for her, and it’ll take someone brave enough to the face the flames to fight this foe.

While I loved the other RM K9 novels, Kit’s story was tough for me at first. There’s a lot of characters from the first three that are thrown at her and readers right in the beginning. Sometimes I found it hard to follow or catch up to what was going on. However, I LOVED Kit and Wes’s interactions. The quiet mountain man who loves his solitude finding solace in a woman…#swoon. While the story is more on what’s happening to the town of Monroe and it’s new residents rather than a love story, it’s still highly entertaining. I wanted more Kit and Wes but definitely got plenty of them with some PG interaction. All in all, a fun addition to this suspense/action romance that’s kept up the action and was certainly never boring!

Through_the_Fire.png

He’s tall.
He’s dark.
He’s brutally handsome…
And he may be her only hope.

Kit Jernigan despairs of ever fitting in with her new tight-knit K9 unit—they’ve been through too much to welcome a stranger. So when a killer strikes, it’s a fight to convince her fellow officers to trust her long enough to catch the woman she knows is responsible.

She can’t do it on her own. What she needs most is a partner: local fire spotter Wesley March.

Wes knows in his heart that Kit is right, and he’s willing to leave his lonely tower to help her prove it. But the more time they spend together, the hotter the fire smolders…and the more danger they’re in. A member of the K9 unit’s inner circle is determined to have her revenge—no matter who gets burned in the process.

This time, it’s personal.

BUILT TO LAST – A Julie Ann Walker Review

img_1296

I am not ready for my BKI boys to me over! I know I know…these stories live on outside of these books. But no more action packed BKI heroes is a tough ill to swallow. I’ve been reading them from the start and Walker always manages to paint such bad-ass heroes. Good thing she saved the baddest of them all for the finale; Angel Agassi. The Iceman. The man without emotions…or so we thought!

BKI has been hunting the infamous Spider for months and are sure they’ve discovered his true identity when a ghost from Angel’s past haunts the screen beside the Spider. Sonya was an agent Angel dealt with in another life. He fell for her, but in order to stay true to his beliefs in protecting his people, he had to give up everything, including Sonya. Now under the Spider’s roof he has to feign indifference as her very image is right before him and her scent is jut as tempting as it was years before. But he wears a different face now and even the woman of his dreams doesn’t recognize him. Its a tough desire to defeat, but Angel can’t jeopardize this mission and risk the lives of thousands all for a shot at forever with Sonya.

Sonya is intrigued by the Prince of Shadow, aka Angel. After spending days with him she’s reminded of Mark, her past love, in his mannerisms and even some of his tells. But the man she loved is dead and the monster in his place is cold and distant. Until one night and one kiss sparks a memory… Now on the run these two have to decide who to trust and where to turn as lies become truth and secrets come to light. Filled with non-stop action, Walker knocks it out of the park with this finale! Angel has always been stone cold and mysterious and watching Sonya slowly crack his shell an reveal the loving man inside was so perfect!

The sides story of Ace and Rusty was so swoony! I really wanted these two to have their own book. There’s something about argumentative couples that just makes the book a lot more interesting and hilarious. Having Ozzie there to break their sexual tension was hysterical! In the end, a sneak peek into all of the BKI crews live and futures was a beautiful send off to this amazing action romance series from one of by auto-buy authors. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store!

Julie.png Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word. Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper. During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for a way to flex my mental muscles,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics. “I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read.” It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion. “Thankfully, my husband – my own personal hero – encouraged my decision to write full time.” Now Julie lives on beautiful Lake Shore Drive with a view that sometimes competes with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, travel, and…reading, of course!

POISON KISSES PART 3 – A Lisa Renee Jones Review

img_4449

The end is here for Seth and Amanda as the past comes the light and truths are hidden behind masterfully woven lies. Amanda fears the past is repeating itself as it seems the Assassin has struck again. Seth knows that convincing Amanda that someone is out to destroy both his and her reputation is going to be a battle to the death; he’s just not sure who’s going to die.

Now that these two seemed to have admitted their love for one another and have fully dived in to trust, only one secret remains: are Amanda’s parents truly dead and who killed them? Who stands to gain from their fall? When the unbelievable presents itself, they have to allow other people in to help them clear their names.

Jones does a great job of weaving together multiple stories and making you doubt what you know is going on as these characters fight for what’s right. I loved watching Amanda and Seth realize there is more to life than killing, even if that IS your life. Only downside: the climax of the stories ARC with our mad scientist out to poison thousands. I was a bit let down for how it all came together. But maybe that was my own brain for wanting a grandiose and explosive ending.

Title: Poison Kisses Part Three
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Release Date: February 20, 2018
Those you love, know how to hurt you. Those you love, know what to hide, because they know what is unforgivable to you. Now that I know what Seth hid from me, I want the secret to be the lie. I don’t want to kill him. I don’t want to leave him. I guess that’s why they say there is a fine line between love and hate. I love and hate that man with such passion, that it damn near hurts. But now, as we face down our shared enemies, as we are lead right back to an explosive discovery about my family, and to the night Seth and I parted ways, we will both be exposed in every way. And it’s time for me to decide if I plan to love Seth Cage for the rest of my life, or kill him, before he kills me.

“I hate you, Seth Cage,” she proclaims in what I know to be an out-of-character emotional outburst that tells me I’ve rattled her.
And earns her my cool reply. “There’s a fine line between love and hate, sweetheart,” I say, but I don’t want her to hate me and it pisses me off. What is it about this woman that makes her my weakness? “I wonder if I missed the taste of poison on your lips, or did I just choose to ignore it?” And I need to know that answer. I close my mouth down on hers, my tongue sliding into her mouth, rough, angry, but she doesn’t respond. She doesn’t even touch me, and I won’t allow her that win. I fold her against me, cupping the back of her head, my tongue licking against hers until she finally fucking moans, and responds.
And damn it, she still tastes just as good as she did, just as right when she’s wrong, but at least I know now. Everything right about this woman will always be wrong, including the moment she bites my lips, drawing blood. “I still hate you,” she hisses.
Wiping my lip, I’m wildly aroused by what just happened, which proves how fucked in the head this woman makes me. And while I’m certain we’d both be more than comfortable with the idea of me pulling her skirt up and fucking her right now, and letting her think she’s manipulating me again, that has to wait until I have her someplace to myself. I release her, snatching up her gun and shoving it under my jacket, inside my holster. “Meet me at the south exit. If you aren’t there, I’ll kill you and then move on to Plan B and kill Franklin. And yes. This is a test. Pass it or you’ll be in my bed, in handcuffs for the rest of your life.”
“You said you’d kill me.”
“After I cuff you to my bed.”
I move to the door and exit into the staff hallway, and then the main school hallway, the scent of her, sweet jasmine, clinging to my skin. Damn it, I used to love that smell.
I’m halfway to the exit when suddenly she’s beside me. “As I know you know from whatever file they gave you on me,” she says without looking at me, “I watched people die because of that man in China seven years ago when he set off poison gas in the subway. I’m not sitting back while he does it again.”
I don’t reply. I just keep walking, but now she’s by my side again, as she was for three solid months, three years ago. Her words and actions are reminding me of what I’d found so damn appealing about this woman: her conviction and her moral compass that were greater than mine, that made her too good for me, and yet, made me want her all the more. Only, it was an act, a façade maintained even now and well. She’s an enemy in an uncomfortable alliance. I don’t believe a word she has said.
We reach the exit and I pause with her directly to my right, my eyes capturing hers. “You’re with me now and no one gets to take you from me. And I’m the only one who gets to kill you.”
“You’re so damn romantic,” she says. “No wonder I missed you.”
“You missed me, sweetheart?”
“That wasn’t literal.”
My lips curve. “And yet you kissed me like you missed me.”

img_4448

Seth and Amanda’s story continues as the super spy duo race to find a mad scientist while navigating their untrustworthy past. Part 2 focuses a lot on Seth and Amanda’s ability to work alongside one another and to at least in the field trust each other’s skill set. There’s not a lot of back and forth from present and past but there’s a deep dive in to Seth’s emotions about Amanda and why she betrayed him years ago. For Amanda it’s the belief that Seth was set to kill her and how can she ever learn to trust him again, even in the face of saving the world.

I liked the continued push and pull between Seth and Amanda. This isn’t some soft and sweet lovey-dovey romance. There’s shoving and biting as these two want to hate each other as much as they want each other. The tension and sexual energy is cataclysmic as they fight for dominance. Slowly the two both begin to reveal what truthfully happened on that fateful night 3 years ago that separated their lives. Seth wanted nothing more than to have Amanda at his back. Amanda feared for her life and the lives of her parents. As they both reveal more and more of the truth, their walls start to crumble and the chemistry that was between them now builds and builds as they prepare to face their foe. With a shockingly misunderstood ending, I can’t wait to see how the finale will wrap up their sordid tale!
